Mercury Dime

The Mercury dime, released first in 1916, and completed in1945 has to be one of my favorite coins.  The details on a very good coin are exquisite, and help to make grading the coin a lot of fun. If the strike was good enough on the reverse of the coin, the bands around the bundle will display as two full bands.  If they are really good there will be a slight split between the bands making it a full split band coin or FB.

The dime itself is interesting as well.  Although it's called a Mercury dime it's actually an image of Liberty wearing a winged cap.  The wings on the cap symbolize freedom of thought, and make Liberty look a lot like the Roman god Mercury, thus the name.

There are a few key dates in the Mercury dime collection.  The 1916-D dime is clearly the most sought after Mercury Dime and is valuable in all sorts of conditions.
